Kosovo bans chicken imports from Brazil

The Food and Veterinary Agency informs citizens that starting from May 20, 2025, it temporarily bans the import of chicken meat and other poultry products from Brazil.

The announcement states that this measure was taken in response to an outbreak of avian influenza (H5N1) on a commercial farm in the state of Rio Grande, Brazil, confirmed on May 16, 2025 by Brazilian authorities.

"This decision aims to protect public health and prevent the possible spread of the disease in the territory of Kosovo.

"Avian influenza is a highly contagious viral disease that affects birds and, in rare cases, can be transmitted to humans. Although there is no evidence that consuming poultry meat or eggs can cause infection, the import ban is a precautionary measure to ensure the food safety of citizens," the announcement says.

The AUVA announces that this decision is in line with international practices and actions taken by other countries, including the European Union, China, and other countries that have suspended imports of chicken meat from Brazil after the confirmation of the outbreak.

The agency further announces that the ban will remain in force until further notice, always based on the epidemiological situation in Brazil and the reassessment of the risk by the FVA. /Telegraph/
